Transfer files from one remote server to another remote server

Updated: Sep 14, 2021

We are going to make use of the SCP command to copy files from one remote server to another remote server.

SCP syntax

scp [switch] [source path of content] [destination path of content]

Providing a [switch] parameter is optional.

If the task is to copy a single file or to copy multiple files belonging to the same directory to the same destination folder, we do not need to provide a switch.

However, if the task is to copy an entire folder, then a switch is required. We will be using the “-r” switch.

Providing [path of content]

If you are sshed into the destination server(remote1) and would like to transfer a folder ‘World’ from the other remote server(remote2), an example scp command would look like

scp -r [username@ip of remote2:path of folder] [path of destination folder]

If you are sshed into the source server[remote2], then

scp -r [path of folder] [username@ip of remote1:path of destination folder]
